Product Overview

What Is a Turbine Gas Flow Meter?

A turbine gas flow meter measures gas volume by letting the flowing gas spin a bladed rotor inside the pipe. Rotor speed rises in proportion to gas velocity, and a sensor counts the turns as electrical pulses. The meter converts those pulses into flow rate and total volume for natural gas, LPG and other clean gases.

A turbine gas flow meter is not a thermal mass flow meter. A turbine meter has a spinning rotor and reads volume, while a thermal meter has no moving parts and reads mass flow from heat transfer. For that type, see our thermal gas flow meter. For steam, gas and air, see our vortex flow meter, and for diesel and other liquids, our oval gear flow meter.

How It Works

How Does a Turbine Gas Flow Meter Work?

  1. Gas Enters the MeterGas flows into the meter body. Many designs use a flow straightener to guide it onto the rotor.
  2. Rotor SpinsThe gas pushes the bladed rotor. Faster flow makes it turn faster.
  3. Sensor Counts the TurnsA pickup sensor sends a pulse as each blade passes. The pulses per unit volume form the meter's K-factor.
  4. Electronics Calculate FlowPulse rate becomes flow rate and pulse count becomes total volume. Some models also correct to standard conditions.
  5. Signal Reaches Your SystemA 4 to 20 mA or RS485 Modbus signal carries the reading to a PLC, DCS or energy monitor.
Why Choose It

Why Use a Turbine Gas Flow Meter?

A flow record on your own gas line shows where the gas goes.

  • Rated at ±1% accuracy, within the range of about ±0.25 to ±1% commonly quoted for gas turbine meters
  • Turndown of about 10:1, with some turbine meters reaching 20:1, and range improves as gas density rises
  • Stainless steel body in sizes from 25 to 300 mm for inline fitting
  • Digital 4 to 20 mA and RS485 Modbus output on 24 V DC for PLC and monitoring systems
  • Turbine metering is a long-established method for natural gas, covered by standards such as AGA Report No. 7 and EN 12261. Confirm certification of your exact model.
  • Local engineering and after-sales support from Techno Bangla

Which Gas Flow Meter Fits Your Line?

Choose a Turbine Meter When

  • The gas is clean and dry, such as natural gas or LPG
  • Flow stays inside about a 10:1 range and does not pulsate
  • Line size is 25 to 300 mm, pressure is up to 16 bar and gas temperature is -20 to 80 °C
  • You can give the meter about 10 pipe diameters upstream and 5 downstream
  • You want volume flow with a digital output to your PLC

Applications

Where Are Turbine Gas Flow Meters Used?

Any pipe that carries clean gas at a fairly steady flow.

  • Natural Gas Lines
  • LPG and Light Hydrocarbon Gas
  • Boiler Fuel Gas
  • Captive Power Generators
  • Textile and Dyeing Mills
  • CNG and LPG Stations
  • Coal Gas Lines
  • Gas Sub-metering
  • Industrial Process Control
Buyer's Guide

How to Choose a Turbine Gas Flow Meter

Share these details with our engineers and we will recommend a suitable meter and size.

  • Flow range and turndown. Note minimum, normal and maximum flow at line conditions. A turbine meter covers about 10:1 on most models, so normal load should sit well inside the range. Do not oversize, because a meter that runs near its minimum loses accuracy.
  • Pressure and temperature. Gas volume changes with pressure and temperature, so ask whether you need correction to standard volume. Our meter is rated to 16 bar and -20 to 80 °C. Line pressure in Bangladesh can swing with supply conditions, so check your lowest and highest values.
  • Gas cleanliness. Contamination of the rotor bearings is reported as a leading cause of turbine meter failure. Fit a filter or strainer upstream, and keep liquid droplets and dust out of the line.
  • Pipe layout. Plan about 10 pipe diameters of straight pipe upstream and 5 downstream, or use a flow conditioner. Avoid pulsating flow, and raise line pressure slowly at start-up so the rotor is not over-speeded.
  • Accuracy statement, output and site rules. Ask for accuracy across the whole flow range and a calibration certificate. Confirm 4 to 20 mA or RS485 Modbus wiring to your PLC, the 24 V DC supply, and whether your area is classified as hazardous and needs an Ex-rated meter.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a turbine gas flow meter show actual or standard volume?

Actual volume, at line pressure and temperature. To report standard volume (Nm³/h), you add pressure and temperature readings and a flow computer or a correcting converter. For example, 62 m³/h actual equals about 500 Nm³/h at 8 barg and 30 °C.

What happens if gas flow goes above the meter's maximum?

The rotor overspeeds, wears the bearings faster and can read wrongly. Pressurise the line slowly, open valves gently and never blow compressed air through the meter. A short burst during a purge can damage the rotor. Size so your peak flow stays within the rated maximum.

What size, pressure and temperature range do you supply?

Our turbine gas flow meters cover 25 to 300 mm line sizes, pressure up to 1.6 MPa (16 bar) and gas temperature from -20 to 80 °C. Accuracy is listed at ±1%, with 4 to 20 mA and RS485 Modbus output on a 24 V DC supply. Exact limits depend on the model, so we confirm the size from your duty point.

How accurate is a turbine gas flow meter?

Our turbine gas flow meter is listed at ±1%. Gas turbine meters are generally quoted between about ±0.25% and ±1% of reading, and accuracy often varies across the flow range. One major brand, for example, states ±1% at upper flows and ±2% at low flows. Ask for the accuracy band over your own flow range.

Can it measure biogas, wet gas or dirty gas?

Not without preparation. Turbine meters are made for clean, dry, filtered gas; moisture and dust damage the rotor and bearings. Biogas usually carries water vapour and other contaminants, so it needs cleaning, drying and a material check first. Our standard list is natural gas, coal gas, LPG and light hydrocarbon gas.

How much straight pipe does a turbine gas flow meter need?

Common guidance, such as AGA Report No. 7, calls for at least 10 pipe diameters of straight pipe upstream and 5 downstream. With a flow conditioner, about 5 diameters are kept between conditioner and meter. Elbows or valves near the meter need more. Follow the datasheet of the exact model, and send us a sketch of your pipework.

Is a turbine gas flow meter suitable for natural gas lines in Bangladesh?

Yes, when the meter matches your gas, pressure, temperature and flow range and the gas is clean and dry. Line pressure can swing, so size for your lowest and highest flow, fit a filter upstream and avoid pulsating flow. Keeping the gas clean protects the rotor bearings. Our engineers check these points during selection.

How much does a turbine gas flow meter cost in Bangladesh?

Price depends on line size, pressure rating, outputs and whether you need temperature and pressure correction. Send your gas type, line size, operating pressure and temperature, and minimum, normal and maximum flow to our engineers by phone or email. We reply with a free quotation.
